February 14: 1st Sunday of Lent

Sacrament of Confession:

Confession is one of the least understood of the sacraments of the Catholic Church. In reconciling us to God, it is a great source of grace, and Catholics are encouraged to take advantage of it often.
But it is also the subject of many common misunderstandings, both among non-Catholics and among Catholics themselves.
-- Confession Is a Sacrament.
The Sacrament of Penance, commonly called Confession, is one of the seven sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church. Catholics believe that all of the sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ himself. In the case of Confession, that institution occurred on Easter Sunday, when Christ first appeared to the apostles after his Resurrection.

Some Lenten Thoughts:

Jesus invites us in this Lenten season to do something that takes us out of the ordinary and into something new.
There are bad habits and unhealthy patterns in all of our lives, baggage we hold tightly.
Can we strip away the comfort of convenience or routine in order to follow Jesus to the dry, barren wasteland of the Lenten desert?
The desert won't allow for much luggage, so in the end, something must change if we want to be transformed with Jesus.
The only way through the hot sand is to let go.

Historical Introductions to the Readings (5OT - Ash Wednesday)

bibleandcandleFirst Reading:  Kings of ancient Judah wavered between faithfulness and independence from God. As a new king came to power, Isaiah, at a Temple liturgy, accepts a call to prophesy before the king.
Second Reading: In prior weeks, we've heard what a boisterous church was in early Corinth.
